Channel 4 was launched on November 2nd 1982 as the fourth terrestrial TV channel in the United Kingdom.
Channel 4 was all set to be launched in the early 1970´s with the transmission towers in place and the infrastructure ready for the UK´s fourth channel to go live. ITV was also interested in expanding their network and TV sets sold in the 1970´s had a spare channel called ITV/IBA 2, this transmission frequency would become Channel 4 in 1982.

Channel 4 was the first TV network to purchase programming from independent companies outside of it´s own network on a large scale. The channel was commercially funded, however since the switch to digital, some funding now comes from TV licensing.
Channel 4 has been know to broadcast many controversial programmes over the years. The channel also has a reputation for broadcasting historical programmes, factual and current affairs.
