BBC One was the first high level image resolution channel launched in the United Kingdom in 1936 as BBC Television Service and remains the most popular TV channel in Great Britain.
BBC Television Service was renamed to BBC TV in 1960 and whereupon renamed to BBC1 in 1964 after the launch of it´s sister channel BBC2. In 1997 the channel became BBC One as we know it today.

BBC TV License
BBC One does not have any TV commercials and is funded by license fees paid by television owners in the United Kingdom. Up until recently, you were able to watch BBC channels using catchup and online services without a TV license, however, BBC have enforced a new law whereas you must own a valid license to watch any of their TV programs using any of their services.
Regional Variations
BBC One also has programming variations covering Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Each variation of BBC One broadcasts news that is optimised for the specific region. BBC Scotland has the broader variation of TV programming, including programmes such as River City and Sportscene that are not available on the main BBC One channel or BBC One Wales.
